Rank Tracker – Full review

Rank Tracker is typically the first place that we start.

Rank Tracker walks you through each step of the process to start a new campaign.

The first thing you do is enter the URL of the site you are wanting to check. Click Next.

Rank Tracker - 01

If you have a Google AdWords or Google Analytics account, you can connect those here, but you don’t have to.

Rank Tracker - 02

Enter the keywords that you want to track for your sites ranking.

Rank Tracker - 03

Rank Tracker is one of the only rank monitoring solutions that I’m aware of that allows you to choose multiple search engines to track.

Typically we will choose Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Even though the main focus is on Google, you can sometimes find some fantastic ways to gain additional traffic from Yahoo and Bing.

Rank Tracker - 04

After going through the campaign setup, you will be taken to the main workspace. Here you can see that you have an absolute ton of options available.

Rank Tracker - 05

Rank Tracker allows you to set automatic updates so that your site will be tracked consistently according the schedule that you set.

Rank Tracker - 06

When we are dealing with a brand new site we need to have a keyword plan laid out. Rank Tracker offers a Keyword Suggestion tool that provides 18 different ways to do keyword research. You can do everything from pulling the results directly from Google AdWords Keyword Planner, to scraping the Google AutoComplete and Related Searches results.

Click on  the Keyword Suggestion icon at the top left of the main screen to get started:

Rank Tracker - 007

This will bring you to the Choose Keyword Research Method Screen. You have to choose one method at a time, but each one of your results pages can be saved and added to as you continue to move through the process. I’ve outlined the options that we always use. Sometimes we will use the Bing and Yahoo options, but usually not.

Rank Tracker - 07

Once you’ve chosen the research method you want, click the next button and you will be brought to the keyword entry screen. We are working on a site for Attorney Marketing, so I’m going to put just a handful of keywords into the suggestion screen to get started.

Rank Tracker - 08

Once you’ve entered in some “big” keywords, click the next button. Rank Tracker will now go out and get keywords based on the initial words that you entered in. As you will see in the screenshot below, Rank Tracker returned 144 suggestions.

Rank Tracker - 09

Select the keywords that you want to continue with and click Next. This will score the keywords that you’ve selected so that you can gauge the number of monthly searches and the competitiveness of each keyword.

Rank Tracker - 10

Select the keywords that you want to import into your project and click next to go the main screen. Click on the Keyword Research Tab to see all of your results. This will allow you to start picking out the keywords you want to rank for!

Rank Tracker - 11

Why Rank Tracker is great: If you were about to use some other rank tracking service you would most likely end up paying hundreds of dollars every year, with a monthly payment subscription (most cost above $10 per month). And if you stop paying you lose all the data. With Rank Tracker you pay once, track as many keywords as you want and you get to keep all that data forever.

Now that we know the keywords we want to rank for, it’s time to go the next module in the SEO Powersuite which is the Website Auditor.

Website Auditor – Full review

Website Auditor is super easy to get started with. When you first open the program you will be greeted with same screen that you were in the Ranking Tracker. Here you enter the url of the site you want to analyze.

Website Auditor - 0

When you enter your url and click next, the Website Auditor will analyze the site and bring you to the following main screen.

Website Auditor - 01

Here you are provided with a quick overview of any errors on your site. Website Auditor will provide you with steps to correct any errors found. It literally walks you through every aspect of your on site optimization!

One thing that we notice right off the bat is that we have some pages with empty title tags. By selecting that error, Website Auditor will show us the pages that have empty title tags.

Website Auditor - 021

When you select the Recommendation option, you will get a step by step explanation of how to address the error. This is a huge timesaver that keeps you from having to scan each page and link of your site manually.

Website Auditor - 03

If you want to dig deeper into your site, you can make a selection on the left side of the screen to view individual pages, get an overall content analysis, check your domain strength and view reports.

We are going to click on the Pages option which will take us to the main screen where we can see all of our pages. Notice the tabs across the top of the page. Each tab provides different information.

The first thing you want to do here is update the rest of the Ranking Factors. Click on the little drop down arrow next to the Update Factors button, and make a selection.

Website Auditor - 04

After you’ve made your selection for updating page ranking factors, you will be presented with all of the possible options that can affect your ranking factors.

Be sure to look at each one along with the description to verify what results you want returned. For our purposes today, I’m selecting all of them.

Website Auditor will return vast amounts of information that can be somewhat difficult to understand. They’ve addressed this by allowing you to generate an easy to read report. The report is as detailed as you want it to be. I’ve chosen to view the full report which is broken up into sections. You will see a few of the sections highlighted below.

Website Auditor - 05
Website Auditor - 06
Website Auditor - 07
Website Auditor - 08
Website Auditor - 09

Something that stands out immediately is that our page is not Mobile Friendly! Now I know that we need to go make this change as fast as possible since Google is placing more emphasis on Mobile Friendly sites.

One of the newest features available in Website Auditor is the ability to create content from directly within the program. Website Auditor will keep you updated on all key factors for ranking in real time! You can save the file and upload directly to your site.

To get started with the Content Editor you need to choose the page you want to edit and enter the keywords that you want it to rank for.

Website Auditor - 10

After you enter in your keyword, click the next button to be taken to the Analyze Webpage Content page. Website Auditor will crawl the search engines you’ve selected and look at your top competitors page to compare how they are using keywords on their sites.

Website Auditor - 11

When it’s done analyzing the competitors pages, you will be brought to the Content Editor screen where you will see the page of your site that you selected. Here you can make changes to the page and follow along with the suggestions as you go! Don’t worry, these changes aren’t live until you save the page and upload it to your site.

You can see in the example below where I’ve typed out some changes. You can also edit the code from here. This is super powerful.

Website Auditor - 12

We run all of our sites through the Website Auditor and since we’ve started doing it, we’ve noticed some HUGE jumps in our search rankings. Honestly this one module is worth the price that you pay for the entire SEO Powersuite.

Why WebSite Auditor is great: It shows you all those on-page SEO mistakes we often miss and overlook, and it shows you how to fix them. Not only that, besides huge amount of on-page SEO checks it does, WebSite Auditor also creates a full sitemap no matter how big your website is. Those of you who are not using WordPress (or if you use some custom CMS) will appreciate this, because almost every sitemap generator tool you may find online is limited or expensive.

SEO Spyglass – Full review

Backlinks are still a large factor in Google’s ranking algorithms. If you have a bunch of high quality backlinks coming into your site, you will have a very good chance of ranking on the first page of Google.

We use SEO Spyglass at the start of every single link building campaign. One of the easiest ways to find sites that might want to link to you is to look at other sites in your industry and see where they are getting their backlinks from.

Here’s how to get started.

Enter the URL of the site that you want to analyze. Here we are looking at one of our competitors for our Attorney Website.

SEO Spyglass - 01

When you click next, SEO Spyglass will crawl the site and find all of their backlinks. This will be displayed on the main page under the All Backlinks tab. Here you should click on the Statistics button to get a good overview of the backlinks. You can see just how detailed the info is.

SEO Spyglass - 02

The next step is to actually go check any of the links that look promising so you can develop an outreach strategy to acquire new backlinks. And just like all of the other modules within the SEO Powersuite, you have the option to produce a report that makes the information much easier to digest.

SEO Spyglass - 03

The other major function that we use SEO Spyglass for is to keep up with our own backlink profiles. Not only should you know how many sites are linking to you, but you should also know the quality of those sites. If you have links coming from spammy sites, Google can penalize your site!

To check your own links in SEO Spyglass, you start out the same way as you did to check competitor backlinks. Enter in your URL and go through the steps to get the results on the main page. As you can see the screen is very similar to the rest of the screens that you’ve seen in the other modules. The tabs across the top of the page allow you to see information in multiple different formats.

SEO Spyglass - 04

One of the big factors that we look for is the Penalty Risk. If we see anything marked with a red label, we will take action to get the link removed. This will help keep our sites in the good graces of Mother Google.

Why SEO Spyglass is great: Because backlinks are still the main ranking factor for Google. Now, with SEO Spyglass you finally have a chance to spy on your competitors and see where do they get the best links from. Who knows, maybe you can get a link to your website from those websites too!

LinkAssistant – Full review

The LinkAssistant is all about helping with your link building campaigns.

This app is designed to help you find linking partners and even manage your outreach efforts.

To get started, enter in the URL for the site or specific page that you want to promote.

LinkAssistant - 01

LinkAssistant will crawl the page and bring you to the next step. Here you need to put the anchor text and description that you prefer to be used for any backlinks pointing to your site.

LinkAssistant - 02

Finally you will enter in your contact information. This is what will be used when you reach out to potential link partners.

LinkAssistant - 03

After you click on finish you will be taken to the main page. You will notice that it’s currently blank. Here you will want to click on Look for Partners. This will pull up the Select Partner Search Method.

I’m going to leave it on Find sites by keyword search. Click Next.

LinkAssistant - 04

Next you need to enter in the keywords that are relevant to your site. You can also have LinkAssistant offer keyword suggestions for you. Once you have your keywords, click next.

LinkAssistant - 05

The next screen will allow you to choose the search engines that you want to use for your link partner search.

LinkAssistant - 06

Now you will come to the Configure Scan Depth Limits screen. This is where you set the number of link partners that you would like to find. The default setting is 30. However if you notice, you can select the No Limits option. This takes quite a while but will return Thousands of results. We always start out with 30.

LinkAssistant - 07

Next you will be brought to the Interested Partners Filter page. If you are looking for sites that allow guest posts, then you need to click the check box that say’s Use “Interested Partners” Filter. In the space provided you can type in search parameters like:

  • Guest Author
  • Submit Post
  • Write for us

LinkAssistant - 08

Finally you will see the Set Ranking Factors and Filters screen. This is where you can set the criteria for the sites that you want links from. We typically click Select all.

LinkAssistant - 09

Once you click next, you can take a minute to go grab a snack or some caffeine, because it takes the system a while to complete the search.

Once the search is completed, you will have a list of potential linking partners like you see below. Take notice of the information that’s provided with each linking opportunity. You will see metrics such as Page Rank and Facebook popularity.

Select the URL’s that you want to look deeper into and click on next.

LinkAssistant - 10

Now you will be taken to the main page. If you want more results, you can go back through the process of selecting more link partners with a different search method. Once you’re satisfied with all of the prospects that Link Assistant has found, you will have a list of sites that match the criteria you are looking for.

LinkAssistant - 11

I’ve highlighted two of the columns to point a couple of things out. Notice that LinkAssistant was able to grab the contact email for the majority of the prospects. You can email your prospects from directly within LinkAssistant when doing your outreach. We will cover this shortly.

The 2nd column is labeled as Include in Link Directory. This software gives you the ability to create a directory such as a Resource page with recommended links. This is a nice way to add links to sites you recommend. If you do add a site to your link directory, be sure to reach out to the site owner or contact to let them know you are linking to them.

Link Building Outreach

Now that you have a nice list of potential backlink prospects, it’s time to start some research to develop a plan of outreach. We usually scroll through the list and check out each site that looks like it has good potential. This can be a little time consuming, but the fact that you have a huge list to pick from still makes this a way easier process.

There are several ways to go about this, but I’m going to show you what we do. The first thing is to scan through the links and check each one that seems interesting.

When we set up the parameters to find these links, LinkAssistant returned the main homepage along with the page that had content that matched our search criteria. If you click on a row to highlight a prospect you will see that you can visit the page to check it out.

LinkAssistant - 12

If the link prospect turns out to not be a good fit, you can click on Remove to get them out of your list.

Let’s say you find a site that looks like a good match for reaching out to. If I click on the email button highlighted by the arrow in the above screenshot, I’m presented with an email client built into LinkAssistant.

I can send an email directly to the contact and have a record of my actions with them. There are built in templates that you can use for different outreach methods. Notice on the screen below, that the Guest Post Inquiry Template is chosen. However I suggest you always customize emails. Don’t just send the same canned template out to people.

LinkAssistant - 13

Continue this process until you’ve exhausted all of your options. We do this for all of our sites and always end up with some high quality backlinks. Now keep in mind that you need to have something of value to offer in exchange for a link.

Common features in all SEO PowerSuite tools

All the apps have an intuitive user interface and customizable workspaces, which let process and organize the data the most convenient way.

The software is Windows, Mac OS X and Linux compatible.

Important: In case of heavy usage you will send a lot of requests to Google and other search engines, which may trigger captcha verification. To avoid that we recommend a use of proxies from
